Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin 1985 set held a reunion meeting today 21st of August, 2021 at the College Multipurpose Hall (2).
The Chairman of the occasion, who is currently S.A to the Minister of Defence for the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mallam Mohammed Abdulkadri while giving a speech on behalf of the SUG 1985 set Secretary Olusegun Oladipo, stated that reunion is as old as human race as well as old as education, which will enable them to cross-fertilise ideas and help each other.
Abdulkadri added that their set graduated when the College was just 11 years old and the College should have been elevated into a University status and they however have a role to play in championing and canvassing for the cause of their Alma mater.
The onetime NTA correspondence for Military Defence, Mohammed Abdulkadri said this reunion of theirs will send a positive message to many students and also serve as encouragement to them as a result of the pace they have set for all. He encouraged his colleagues that if they are proud of their alma mater, they should always strive for the betterment of the College in that she has produced key players who have contributed to national development.
Mohammed Abdulkadri said that though he appreciated the effort of the organizer of this reunion, but there are challenges in terms of funds and lackadaisical attitude of some members towards the reunion.
In his parting words, he said “If you want to go fast, walk alone, but if you want to go far, walk in group. If you run fast alone, you will grow out of stamina but those coming with peace in group will leave such a person behind and go far”. He however encouraged his colleagues to learn to walk as a team and not individually.
The 1985 set SUG President, who is currently a Lecturer in FCT College of Education, Zuba Abuja, Dr. Abdulwahab Babatunde while delivering his lecture at the occasion said that he sees today’s gathering as a reunion of souls, to recount the good old days of brotherly and sisterly unconditional love and celebrate the wrinkles, baldness and the grey hairs that marked their mileage. He added that the reunion should be a place to recall history with jokes, smiles and prayers for the departed members.
Dr. Lawal said that the prevailing situations in most Alumni meetings is that the rich one’s comes to show off and the poor one’s are intimidated, so ours’ shouldn’t be like those.
The Ag. Provost who is an ’86 alumnus of the College Dr. Jimoh Ahmed Ayinla while giving his special message at the occasion praised the National Executive of the Alumni Association of the College for taking the bull by the horn and delivering on their mandate for piloting the affairs of the union to fruition up to this level. He advised that efforts should be put in place for election of substantive executives in line with the by-law setting up the Alumni association in the college. He charged them to rise up to the challenge of using their position to donate generously towards the speedy development of their Alma matter.
The Ag. Registrar Mr. Abayomi Lawal in his goodwill message advised the Alumni to double efforts through this reunion to appeal to the State and Federal Governments to return Teacher’s College back to regain the lost glory of Teacher’s education across the nation. He said that they should never be discouraged but work as one whole family who desire to progress in their endeavours.
While delivering the speech of the National Caretaker Chairman of the College Alumni Association, Mrs. Toyin Sanusi by its National PRO Mr. Ajadi Babatunde, said she was elated, geared up by the spirit of the ’85 set reunion ceremony and also motivated with their progressive moves towards placing the college appropriately.
She stated that though they are faced with various challenges in moving the union forward when they assumed office, despite that, they were able to achieve tremendous successes by full renovation of the Alumni National Secretariat and Students’ Affairs Directorate in order to assist the Management in their own little ways. Meanwhile in making sure students who graduated from the college were also integrated into the Alumni Association, tokens were charged as Alumni fees and such money were used judiciously.
She added that steps have been taken to give out Alumni souvenirs to students at their point of graduation. Towards the end of her speech, she mentioned that the 1985 set are automatically accepted and upgraded into Advancement Committee of the Alumni because of their effort within the short period of time of their reunion.
The Chairman Organizing Committee Mallam Saka Saliu and the Chairperson, Dr. Mrs. Hawakulu Aliyu nee Abubakar jointly appreciated the physical efforts and financial contributions of members of the 1985 Alumni set, while charging all other members to make themselves available physically on the train of progressive movement of the union towards giving back to their Alma matter.

The Highlights of the Dinner includes Financial Reports, Sharing of Experiences while in the College by Members, Formation of Executives and Merriments.
