Requirement for Admission into 3-Years NCE Regular Programmes
The joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) now advertises each year inviting applications from suitable qualified candidates for admission into all colleges of Education in the country.
The requirements for admission set out by college must however be met.
General Entry Requirement for direct Admission into 3 years N.C.E. programme.
Any candidate with one of the following qualification is eligible for consideration for direct admission:
- Teachers’ Grade II Certificate normally with a minimum of three credits or merits. Two of which must be in the subject the candidate wishes to study.
- The General Certificate of Education (GCE) ordinary level or the school Certificate or Senior School Certificate with at least five passes at a sitting three of which must be at WASC credit level. Two of the credit must be in the subject the candidates wishes to study.
- The general Certificate of Education (GCE) ordinary level or the West African School Certificate (WASC) or SSC, with four credits at two sittings two of which must be in the subject the candidates wishes to study.
- Intermediate City and Guilds Certificates or Federal Crafts Training Certificate with the five passes, two of which must be at credit levels plus at least, a pass in Technical Drawing.
- General Certificate in Education (G.C.E) ordinary level passes in any five subject three of which must be at the WASC Credit Levels.
- Grade II Teachers Certificate (Flat passes) Plus the Associateship Certificate in Education from recognized University with Credits or Merits in relevant subject in lieu of credit, passes at the Teachers Grade II Certificate Examination.
Department Requirement
In addition to the college general requirement candidates must satisfy the following respective departments.
- Students who wish to offer English as a major have Credit/Merit English Language and at least, a pass in English Literature.
- Those who wish to offer physics, Chemistry, Geography or Economics must at least have a pass in Mathematics.
- Home Economic, Food and nutrition or family and Human relationship students must, at least have a pass in one of the sciences subject; Biology, Chemistry or Physics.
- Business Education:
Accountancy/Business Management (Option): must have a credit in either Commerce or Economics. - Office Education/ Business Management:
Candidate must have credit eat G.C.E.O level or WASC in any of the following subjects, Typewriting, shorthand, Business methods, introductory, management, Commerce and Economics or a pass in Office practice and typewriting. - Physical and Health Education (PHE):
Candidates with grade II teacher certificate (Passed) with credit/merit in P.H.E and a pass in any of the following General Sciences Health Science, Agric, Science, biology, Chemistry and Physics, G.C.E O/L holders with credit in any of the following Science subject: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Integrated Science, Health Science, may also be considered for admission into NCE PHE. - Primary Education:
Candidate who wishes to offer primary education must have a minimum of 3-5 years post qualification teaching experiences. - NCE Arabic Medium:
The conduct of the teaching of Arabic, Islamic Studies and Education courses shall be wholly in Arabic Language in the NCE Arabic medium Programme.
Entry Qualification:
- Senior Islamic Studies Certificate (SISC)
- Thahariyyah/Tanijhaiyah Certificate from recognize institutions in Nigeria.
- Thahariyyah certificate from Arab countries in addition to these qualification candidates. Shall be subjected to compterzue examination and interview before admission into the programme.
- Social Studies: Those who wish to offer social studies must have Credit/Merit in Social studies in any two of the following subjects: Government, Economics, Geography, and History
- Integrated Service: Credit/merit in integrated science, General sciences or in any one of the following: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics is a necessary condition for admission.
NOTE: In all subjects, at least a pass in English is required.
Requirement for Admission into NCE Sandwich Programme
The NCE Sandwich course is for duration of five contact sessions Candidates admitted for the programm will be required to attend a ten-week contact term per session during each long vocation. During the remaining part of each session, student will be required to submit assignments/project as scheduled by their department.
Applicants for admission should normally be serving teachers in recognized schools any may possess any of the following qualifications.
- The Grade II Teachers with Credit or merit in two combinable subjects.
- The GCE ‘O’ Levels WASC or SSC with five passes at a sitting, two of which must be at credit level and combinable.
- Associateship Certificate in Education
- Flat Grade II Teachers Certificate with at least five years post qualification teaching experience.
Department Requirements:
Technical Education:
Federal Craft Certificate or City and Guilds or GCE (O/L) WAEC or SSC (with five passes at a sitting) or Teachers, Grade II Certificates with minimum of two credits in any of the following: Wood work, metal Work, Blocklaying and Connecting Electronics and Mechanics and at least a pass in Technical Drawing.
Accounting and Business Management: Office Education/Business Management:
The GCE (O/L) WAEC or SSC what at least passes in the five papers at a sitting tywo of which must be at credit/merits in the under listed subjects or teachers Grade II with at least two credits/merits in any of the under listed subject or RSA II or Pitman Examination (Intermediate) with passes in any two of the under listed Account, Commerce, Typewriting, Shorthand, Introductory Management or Business methods, Office Practice or Secretariat Studies Economics and Mathematics.
Home Economics:
Teachers Grade II Certificate or WAEC/GCE ‘O’ level, or SSC with at least five passes at a sitting. The passes must include one of the following: Chemistry, Biology, Physics General Science, Integrated Science, Health Science and Agric Science, plus a credit pass in Home Economics afn any other subject.
Fine And Applied Arts:
Candidates must have credit in Fine art or planting and Decoration or WASC, Grade II, GCE (O/L). SSC, City and Guilds or any other similar qualifications.
- Candidates should have credit/merit in Music at WASC, Grade II, GCE ‘O’ Level or any other qualification or a pass in the department aptitude adn auditioning test (practical and written in Lieu of credit/Merit passes in Music at the Teachers Grade II Certificate examinations G.C.E. ‘O’ Level or the WASC Examinations.
- A pass in Music at the Teachers’ Grade II certificate Examinations or WASC/GCE ‘O’ level, or SSC plus a pass in the department audition (practical and written) test in Music.
- The Associated Board of the Royal School of Music (ABRSM) London Grade ii/iii/iv/v/vi/vii/viii/ theory certificate in Lieu of credit/Merit passes at the Teachers' Grade II Certifcate Examination, GCE ‘O’ Level or the WASC or SSC.
Social Studies
Credit/Merit in social strudies or in any two of the following Economics, Geography, Government and History.
- Primary Education: Grade II Teachers certificate with at least three years post qualification teaching experience and a success in special Departmental aptitude, auditioning test practical and written) in Music.
- All candidates must have at least a pass in English Language at Teachers Grade II Certificate or WASC/GCE ‘O’ level SSC or IJMB.
Adequacy of the Scale for Sandwich Programmes:
These are five contact session in the programme, with each session lasting ten weeks A 50 - week sandwich programme is equivalent to the 84-week of teaching programme in contacts because:
- There are more lecture contact in the Regular Programme.
- The sandwich programme of 50 weeks excludes the 12 weeks of teaching practice which is inclusive of the 84 weeks of the regular programme because the sandwich students are observed for teaching practice in their respective schools.
- The syllabuses being used for the two programmes are the same only that for the sandwich programme a three-year curriculum is broken into years.
- There are vocation assignments in between the contact sessions in all courses this is part of the continuous assessment of 40%.
Requirement for Entry into Sandwich Diploma Programmes
Diploma in the Teaching of Arabic and Islamic Studies
This is one of the programmes run by the college. It started in July 1985, following the approval of the Ministry of Education and the College Council. The course programme runs for three contact session of eight to ten weeks each (July – September) of every session for theoretical parts and from September to June of the session for practical teaching in the schools of the students normal assignment.
The students do their teaching practice after their second year. They also write long Essay during the last session of the programme.
Entry requirements: Any candidate with one of the following qualifications is eligible for consideration for admission.
- Grade II Certificate with credit/merit in Arabic and Islamic Studies;
- The General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary level or the West African School Certificate (WASC) with credit in Arabic and Islamic Studies.
- Higher Muslim Certificate from any college of Arabic or its equivalent.
- Thanawi/Tawjihi Certificate from recognized institutions.
APPLICATION AND ADMISSION: Advertisement for application for admission is always in February and Shortlisted candidates are expected to pass a written concessional examination in Arabic Language and translation before they are finally given admission. At the end of the course, successful candidate will be awarded a professional certificate Diploma in the Teaching of Arabic and Islamic Studies by the college. That would enable the recipient to teach effectively at primary and junior secondary schools.
Advance Diploma in the Teaching of Arabic and Islamic Studies
This new course is designed to improve the academic and professional standard or teachers who are already teaching Arabic or Islamic Religious Knowledge in post-primary schools.
The course is for a duration of two contact sessions. This course will prepare them for Degree courses in Arabic and Islamic Education.
Holders of Diploma in the Teaching of Arabic and Islamic Studies from recognized tertiary institutions with credits or merits in Arabic and Islamic studies are qualified for admission into Advanced Diploma programmes. Candidate with lower grades may be admitted into a one session Pre-post Primary Diploma Course.
Shortlisted candidates are expected to pass a written examination.
Diploma in the Teaching of Christian Religious Studies
Any candidate with one of the following qualifications is eligible for consideration for admission:
- Certificate in Theology or Religious Education from recognized Bible College or Theological College or Seminary.
- Grade II teachers Certificate with at least, a pass in Bible Knowledge.
- West African School Certificate/Senior Secondary School Certificate with credit in Bible Knowledge or General Certificate in Education (GCE) ordinary level.
- Diploma certificate from a Christian Training Institute (CTI), prospective candidates are expected to take a written concessional examination to test their level of knowledge in Christian Religious Knowledge.
Advance Diploma in the Teaching of Christian Religious Studies
The philosophy of Advanced Diploma in the teaching of Christian Religious Studies is in line with Nigeria’s philosophy of education that intends to give instructions in the areas of moral, religious, and academic values, necessary for positive and tolerant interpersonal and human relations. It is intended to produce excellent, knowledgeable and exemplary teachers for Primary and Post-Primary Schools in Nigeria.
The Course Objectives include:
- Acquiring adequate knowledge of the scriptures, language and methodology requisite for the teaching of Christian Religious Education in Primary and Junior Secondary Schools.
- Expressing and accommodating correctly and respectively the various church beliefs and practices without prejudice;
- Emphasizing the importance of Christianity in human life and leading the learners to search for the truth and living by the truth.
- Stressing the need for national unity and peace;
- Demonstrating satisfactory intellectual ability to benefit from further studies in Christian Religious Education.
Entry Qualification
Graduates with Credit in C.R.S., Diploma from College of Education and Theological Seminary.
Pre-NCE Programme under NCACE Mandate Entry Qualifications
Pre-NCE Science and Vocational Subjects:
- WASC/GCE (O/L) with at least four passes in English Language, Mathematics and two other Science-related subjects or
- Teachers Grade II Certificate with passes in English Language, Mathematics/Arithmetic processes, General/Integrated Science and any other science related subjects such as Health Science, Agricultural Science, Applied Biology, Home Economics etc. or
- SSC/GCE with four passes at a sitting or five passes at two sittings including English Language, Mathematics and other relevant sciences subjects.
- FCC with passes in four academic subjects including Mathematics Science, English Language and Social Studies.
Pre-NCE Technical:
- WASC/GCE (O/L) SSC with at least four passes at a sitting or five passes at two sittings including English Language, Physics and Technical Drawing.
- City and Guilds Certificate with at least, a pass grade in Mathematics, English Language, Physics and Technical Drawing. Or
- WASC Technical/Craft/Intermediate/Part II/Course B Certificate in Technical related subject. Or federal credit certificate with at least a pass in four academic subjects including English Language, Mathematics and Science related subjects. Or.
- Federal Craft Certificate with at least pass in four academic subjects including English Language, Mathematics and Science.
- T.C. II Certificate with, at least, four passes in English, Mathematics and Science related subjects.
Pre-NCE Business Studies
- SC/GCE ‘O’ Level with four passes at a sitting or 5 passes at two sittings including English Language, Mathematics and Business related subjects. Or
- Teachers Grade II Certificate with at least, a pass in English, Mathematics/Arithmetic processes, Integrated Science , Geography or Social Studies.
Pre-NCE Nigerian Languages
- WASC/GCE (O/L) SSC with passes in at least, four subjects at a sitting, one of which must be at credit level in either English Language, and Literature in English at least a pass in one of the three major Nigerian Languages (Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba).
- WASC/GCE O/L with, at least, five passes at two sittings including a credit in English Language, or Literature in English and a Nigerian Language. Or
- A Teachers’ Grade II Certificate with at least a pass in a Nigerian Language.
Pre-NCE French
- WASC/GCE O/L SSC with at least, four subjects at a sitting one of which must be at credit level and include English Language or English Literature. Or
- A Complete Teachers’ Grade II Certificate.
Pre-NCE Music
- WASC/GCE O/L SSC with passes in at least, four subjects at a sitting, one of which must be at credit level in either English Language, Literature in English or anyone of the three major Nigerian Languages (Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba) or
- WASC/GCE with at least, five passes at two sittings including a credit in English Language, or Literature in English. Or
- A complete Teachers’ Grade II Certificate.
Pre-NCE Social Sciences
- SSC/GCE (O/L) with a passes at a sitting or 5 passes at two sittings including English Language, and two social science related subjects, preferably Economics and Geography.
- A complete Teachers Grade II Certificate with at least a pass in Economics, Geography and Social Studies.
Remedial Programme
A one year Remedial programme is designed to coach candidates who have attempted WASC/GCE ‘O’ Level SSC Examinations, and obtained 3 credits passes, but could not posses the pre-requisite qualification for direct admission into College.
Courses in NCE Sandwich Diploma Programmes
Sandwich programmes are essentially the same as those in NCE regular programme. The only difference is in the nature of the spacing of the courses. The courses of the NCE Regular programme are designed to last three years while those of the NCE sandwich programmes are designed to cover five contact sessions.
